About the Project

The Scottish Palestine Cancer Nurse Project (SPCNP) is dedicated to supporting Palestinian cancer nurses by providing vital training opportunities in Scotland. Founded by Gerry O’Hare, a Glasgow-based Cancer Nurse Specialist, the project builds on 14 years of collaboration with Palestinian nursing colleagues to improve cancer care in the West Bank and Gaza.

Why This Project Matters

Palestinians living under occupation face severe restrictions that impact healthcare, including:

  • Limited access to medical training and resources.
  • Destruction of hospitals and healthcare infrastructure.
  • Restricted movement, preventing patients from receiving necessary treatments.

Ongoing violence and instability, creating further challenges for healthcare professionals. The project’s mission is to provide practical solidarity by equipping Palestinian cancer nurses with advanced clinical skills that can be applied in their home country.

Our Work & Partnership

SPCNP is in partnership with Bethlehem University and Scottish healthcare institutions to:

  • Support master’s student cancer nurses from the West Bank.
  • Facilitate clinical placements in Glasgow and across Scotland.
  • Provide a safe learning environment free from occupation-related restrictions.
  • Develop best practices that strengthen Palestinian healthcare systems.

Current & Future Plans

  • June 2025: Hosting the first group of Palestinian student nurses for clinical placements.
  • Spring 2026: Second group to be supported.
  • Long-term goal: Establish a sustainable model for ongoing training.

Challenges & Support Needed

Palestinian nurses face travel restrictions and require Israeli approval for visas. While we cannot control the visa process, we ensure full support once they arrive in Scotland, including:

  • Accommodation
  • Food & transport
  • Clinical mentorship

Each placement costs £2,500 per nurse, and we rely on donors and partners to make this possible.
